Curse of Darkness is a bit meh for me, too many corridors, too much time pushing the left stick forward Great soundtrack, some fun secrets and a fun button masher with interesting movesets. Legacy of Darkness includes the complete package, with prequel story and some redesigned stages. Personally, i'm a fan of the 64vanias, i consider them the last classsicvanias and they capture perfectly the essence. This is probably the area where you're going to get the most polarized opinions I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I may need a break before jumping into another one because they are challenging! Have you played this game ERA? If not, you definitely should. So there is my experience with my first classic style Castlevania game. Here’s some examples (didn’t put the songs everyone knows like vampire killer and bloody tears, but rest assured they’re in this game and slap as hard as ever!) Rondo of Blood has a unique soundtrack for all of its platforming stages - including the bonus ones, I’ve discovered (haven’t played them yet, maybe i will as Maria just to test her out) - and they’re all bangers, as to be expected by the series. So that’s why the gameplay and level design resonated, but I can’t close this out without shouting out the OST. I’d die before the first checkpoint many times, and many tries later, I was getting through the entire stage without dying before the boss. And once you’re adapted many deaths later, you feel like the monster killing badass you’re meant to be, breezing through stages with ease as you try to maximize the number of hearts you have for the boss. ![]() The 2D Mario player in me had to adjust, room for error there is definitely not.īut it left such a lasting impression, I can remember The exact layout and enemy placement of every single stage I played this week, and what my strategy was to get past them. The game practically forces you to not rush in, you have to learn and really think about every single move you make when you’re around danger. This game actually has two playable characters, but I read the other one is easy mode/the game isn’t really designed around her so I played the entire thing as Richter). Everything feels SO tightly accomodated to Richter’s moveset (which is pretty simple - jump, whip, subweapon. ![]() So what makes it great? It’s the level design. Your time will be spent dying over and over again and learning the stages, enemy patterns, optimal routes and weapons, etc. If you were to play through the entire game without dying, it likely wouldn’t take you long. 6 are standard longer platforming stages with some checkpoints and boss at the end (the checkpoints reset with a game over), 1 is a boss rush stage, and one is the final boss. Nevertheless, the vania bug bit me hard this time so I finally saw it through.įor those who are curious of the structure and maybe haven’t played these game, Rondo is structured into 8 separate stages. Thus, I was discouraged from playing it due to not feeling constant progress I feel in the Metroidvania style games. Classicvania is the Dark Souls of 2D Platformers
